Every police academy class at Golden West College is offered the opportunity to register for the national bone marrow donor registry through the efforts of Officers Give Hope. Officers Give Hope is a non-profit organization comprised of volunteers from nine California law enforcement agencies dedicated to sponsoring marrow donor drives throughout the law enforcement community in California. One of the police recruits, who was in the final few weeks of the academy, learned that he was a match for not one, but two individuals in need of a marrow transplant. He was originally told that he would need to travel to Northern California for the collection process. He contacted the Recruit Training Officer staff and advised them he may need to withdraw from the academy in order to proceed with the process for one of the patients. He was a self-sponsored recruit who was willing to do whatever was necessary to help another human being. Fortunately, the staff learned of the issue and contacted the Be the Match organization who advised the recruit that the collection could be done locally. Needless to say, this is a testament not only to the quality training the recruits receive in the academy to reinforce the Six Pillars of Character, but exemplifies the character of this individual recruit.
Sometimes, as leaders we think we are the ones who teach the lessons, as we should aspire to do. However, in this example, it was the recruit teaching us all what responsibility and caring is truly all about. He was willing to forgo weeks of training and the need to start the academy all over in order to help someone in dire need.
